The amphitheater in Side was built in the 2nd century BC. It was originally a Hellenistic theater, where 16,000 spectators spent their leisure time watching real gladiators fight. They were loved, despised, and feared all at once. The bloody battles stirred delight and admiration for the main characters among the people. Even the girls watched the battle with great interest. No action-packed film with sophisticated special effects can convey the powerful energy that permeated the atmosphere of the performance on stage.
Originally, the amphitheater in Side had massive two-tiered stands. The first tier, supported by powerful arches, has survived to this day. Now, you can see 22 rows of intact seating that smoothly lead to the central round platform, which is surrounded by a strong wall. The wall ensured the safety of the spectators, protecting them from attacks by wild animals. On the podium, you can see the remains of statues and bas-reliefs, as well as the traditional masks of the Muses of Tragedy and Comedy (Melpomene and Thalia). One is crying, the other is laughing. All these items once adorned the arena. From the top row, a stunning panorama unfolds, with views of the sea and the old town of Side. It provides a clear picture of what the resort looked like many centuries ago.
For our guests, we have developed a thematic city tour of Side. On the tour, you will see all the most interesting historical landmarks of the region and immerse yourself in the pristine beauty of the nature of these places. Read the details and book. It will be interesting!
